Canterbury School Partners with Out of the Garden Project to Support Local Families in Need
Greensboro, NC—Canterbury School is hosting a food collection to support its long-standing service-learning partner, Out of the Garden Project. The greater Greensboro community is invited to contribute nonperishable food items now through November 20 to help local families experiencing food insecurity this fall.
Collection boxes will be available outside Canterbury’s Brown Hall Administration Building, located at 5400 Old Lake Jeanette Road, Greensboro, NC. All donations will go toward supporting families through the Out of the Garden Project’s Operation Backpack program, which provides weekend meals for children and their families at 8 Title 1 schools across Guilford County. Any excess food collected will be used to supplement the produce and fresh food that is offered through Out of the Garden Project’s Fresh Mobile Market free pantry program, which provided over 125,000lbs of food to close to 2,700 families in September, prior to the current crisis.
This effort comes at a critical time. With many local families affected by recent disruptions in federal pay and the anticipated reduction in SNAP benefits in November, the need for community support has grown. Out of the Garden Project works to ensure that families can easily access help, whether for a brief period or longer-term support by bringing food into food deserts and needy neighborhoods throughout the Piedmont Triad through a multitude of program types.
“Service is a vital part of a Canterbury education,” said Harrison Stuart, Head of School. “Through partnerships like this, our students learn that leadership begins with empathy by showing up for others with intention and care. Let’s get the community involved and make a difference during this crucial time.”
“Canterbury has been a valuable part of Out of the Garden Project’s efforts to end childhood hunger. During this time of crisis, we are grateful to the community members who are recognizing and are rallying to meet the elevated needs and demands on our organization to provide for the most vulnerable,” said Beth Crise, Out of the Garden Project President. “We are a community that comes together to feed the community; supporting thousands of families in the Triad that face the food gap every day as they struggle to provide enough food for their children.”

Canterbury School Expands Campus with New Property Acquisition, Thanks to Generous Anonymous Gift
Canterbury School will be expanding its campus footprint after a recent property acquisition made possible by the generosity of an anonymous Canterbury family. The newly acquired land and home, located adjacent to Canterbury’s current campus, 4401 N. Church St., includes approximately .8 acres. Canterbury’s acquisition provides an exciting opportunity to increase the campus footprint.
As part of Canterbury’s strategic vision, this expansion will support future generations of students and faculty, ensuring a vibrant, innovative, and inclusive education experience. This acquisition also comes at a pivotal moment for the school, serving as a tremendous kickstart to Canterbury’s Legacy Campaign. The expansion aligns perfectly with the school’s vision of growth and investment in its future.
“We are deeply grateful to the Canterbury family, who wishes to remain anonymous, for their incredibly generous gift,” said Harrison Stuart, Head of School. “This meaningful investment unlocks exciting potential for Canterbury’s campus and also plays a pivotal role in advancing our Legacy Campaign. This campaign is dedicated to ensuring the school’s growth, financial sustainability, and continued academic excellence. This gift enables us to further preserve and protect Canterbury’s campus for current and future generations to come.”
The Legacy Campaign seeks to secure Canterbury’s future by investing in top-notch faculty, hiring and retention, and unrestricted endowment. The generous donation from this anonymous family demonstrates their deep commitment to Canterbury’s mission and their confidence in its future.
