Nourishing the Spirit
Spiritual life is an important part of the Canterbury experience. Rooted in the Episcopal tradition, we create space for students to reflect, ask meaningful questions, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Our approach is thoughtful, welcoming, and inclusive. Families at Canterbury come from a variety of faith backgrounds, while some may not practice a particular faith tradition at all. What unites our community is a shared commitment to kindness, character, compassion, and care for others. Grounded in Episcopal values and shaped by traditions like chapel, prayer, and reflection, Canterbury encourages students to grow spiritually while feeling fully known, respected, and valued for who they are and what they believe.
Canterbury School Prayer
Take into your hands, O Lord, Canterbury School and bless each member of it. Make it a place after your own heart. Enlighten by your Holy Spirit those who teach and those who learn. Forgive us for the things that we have done wrong and help us to treat others as we want to be treated. Help us to grow in grace and become who you have created us to be. Give us a true desire to learn, to love, to serve, and to live, so that we may grow to serve others the world over, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
What It Means to Be an Episcopal School
Families often ask what it means that Canterbury is an Episcopal school. At Canterbury, our Episcopal identity shapes how we learn together, care for one another, and how faculty support students as they grow into thoughtful, compassionate people.
The Episcopal tradition values both faith and reason, encouraging students to ask meaningful questions, engage thoughtfully with different perspectives, and reflect deeply on the values that guide their lives. We believe education should nurture the whole child — mind, body, and spirit — while helping students develop the confidence, empathy, and character needed to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
As an Episcopal school, we are grounded in the belief that every person has inherent worth and dignity. We strive to create a community where students and families of all faiths, backgrounds, and perspectives feel welcomed, respected, and valued for who they are and what they believe.
These values come to life each day at Canterbury through worship, relationships, service, reflection, and a shared commitment to caring for others. Together, they help shape a school community where students are encouraged to grow with curiosity, lead with compassion, and develop a strong sense of purpose.
Love
We believe every child is known and valued as an individual. Students are supported intellectually, socially, emotionally, and spiritually in a community grounded in kindness, empathy, and mutual respect. Relationships are central to the Canterbury experience, and students learn that caring for others is an essential part of strong character and leadership.
Worship
As a community, we gather regularly in chapel to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most. Through prayer, music, storytelling, and student participation, chapel offers shared experiences that foster gratitude, perspective, and belonging.
Chapel is not about requiring students to adopt a particular set of beliefs. Rather, it creates space for reflection, spiritual growth, and thoughtful conversation about values, community, and the world around us.
Welcome
Canterbury is a community rooted in openness, respect, and understanding. Families of all backgrounds, faith traditions, and perspectives are welcomed and valued here. Students learn that meaningful dialogue begins with listening well, engaging with curiosity, and treating others with dignity and compassion.
Our Episcopal identity supports an environment where differences are honored, and every child is encouraged to develop both confidence and empathy.
Serve
Service is an important expression of empathy, responsibility, and leadership. Through Canterbury’s servant leadership program and community service experiences, students learn that leadership is not about recognition or status, but about caring for others and contributing meaningfully to the world around them.
These experiences help students develop perspective, humility, and a lifelong commitment to serving their communities with compassion and integrity.
Question
Curiosity is essential to both academic and personal growth. Students are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, explore ideas openly, and approach learning with both confidence and humility.
At Canterbury, faith and learning are not separate pursuits. We believe both invite students to think deeply, reflect meaningfully, and better understand themselves, others, and the world they are preparing to lead.
