Kindergarten
Kindergarten is an important step in a child’s academic journey. At Canterbury, students are supported in ways that help them feel known, capable, and ready to learn. When children feel comfortable and encouraged, they are more willing to ask questions, try new things, and develop confidence in their abilities.
Our kindergarten program builds strong foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics while encouraging creativity, independence, and collaboration. Students are guided as they develop skills that support both academic growth and positive relationships with others.
A balanced approach to learning.
Kindergarten students learn best through a balance of structure, movement, conversation, and exploration. Lessons are thoughtfully designed to support early literacy, writing, and mathematical thinking while giving students opportunities to engage actively in the learning process.
Students participate in a variety of experiences throughout the day, including small group instruction, whole group learning, and opportunities for creative exploration. Teachers encourage students to ask questions, share ideas, and develop confidence in expressing their thinking.
Recognizing that young children benefit from movement and variety, classroom time is balanced with opportunities to stretch, play, and recharge. Students enjoy recess twice daily along with activities that support physical development and coordination.
Learning through exploration.
Curiosity is an important part of the kindergarten experience. Teachers create opportunities for students to wonder, predict, and problem-solve as they engage with curriculum.
Instruction is designed to meet students where they are, recognizing that children develop skills at different paces. Teachers provide support and encouragement while helping each child build independence and resilience.
