GREENSBORO, N.C. — August 21 — Canterbury School has been selected to receive the inaugural Hearts for Hunger Teach Award from Out of the Garden Project, in recognition of the school’s longstanding commitment to service and its partnership with the local nonprofit. Beth Crise, Executive Director of Out of the Garden Project, explained why they wanted to honor the Canterbury community, “Education has the power to shape not only minds, but hearts. Canterbury School has inspired its students to embrace compassion, leadership, and service through a longstanding partnership with Out of the Garden Project. By teaching that every act of service strengthens the community, Canterbury is helping raise a generation that understands it takes a community to feed a community.”
Out of the Garden Project is dedicated to fighting food insecurity throughout the Piedmont Triad by bringing healthy food directly into needy and underserved neighborhoods via a variety of programs that are designed to remove barriers and meet people where they are.
The award will be presented during Out of the Garden Project’s annual Hearts for Hunger fundraising event on Thursday, September 10, from 6–9 p.m. at Summerfield Farms. This year’s theme is Denim and Diamonds and will feature dinner, silent auction items, stories of hope, and celebration of the partners who have made their work possible.
Through Canterbury’s Servant Leadership Program, students volunteer with Out of the Garden weekly throughout the school year, putting the school’s commitment to service into practice and contributing to an organization working to address hunger in the local community.
“Service is an important part of how we help our students understand that leadership is about more than what you accomplish for yourself,” said Harrison Stuart, Head of School. “Through our partnership with Out of the Garden, our students have the opportunity to serve alongside others, see the needs within their community, and understand the difference they can make when they show up with empathy, responsibility, and purpose.”
Out of the Garden’s Hearts for Hunger event brings together community members to support the organization’s work to fight hunger and provide food to children and families in the Triad. The evening will offer an opportunity to celebrate the organization’s work, honor community partners, and support its ongoing mission.
