Middle School (5-8)
Middle School at Canterbury is a time of meaningful academic growth and increasing independence. Students strengthen skills in writing, reading, mathematics, and critical thinking while developing confidence in their voice and ownership of their learning.
With a balance of academic challenge, collaboration, and hands-on discovery, students learn to think deeply, communicate clearly, and approach new ideas with curiosity. As the oldest students on campus, they also take on leadership roles, building responsibility and self-awareness that prepare them for high school and beyond.
English
English classes build students’ skills in reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary through a balanced approach that emphasizes analysis, expression, and growth as communicators. Students read and interpret a variety of texts, while strengthening comprehension and critical thinking skills through discussion, annotation, and close reading. Writing instruction focuses on developing clear, well-structured writing across genres, with increasing emphasis on analytical, persuasive, and argumentative essays as students progress through the grades.
Math
Middle school math uses the Connected Mathematics Program (CMP), a problem-centered curriculum that promotes inquiry, collaboration, and deep mathematical understanding. Students develop strong reasoning and problem-solving skills while making meaningful connections across mathematical strands and real-world applications. In 7th and 8th grade, students take one of two tracks – some students complete a two-year Algebra course, while others take Algebra one year and Geometry the second year. The Geometry course is an advanced-track program equivalent to a high school Mathematics II course.
Science
Middle school science encourages students to think critically, ask questions, and engage with the world through hands-on investigation and real-world application. Across 5th through 8th grade, students explore physics, biology, environmental science, astronomy, chemistry, and the human body while developing skills in inquiry, experimentation, data analysis, and scientific reasoning. Through collaborative projects, lab experiences, and problem-solving challenges, students build curiosity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of how science shapes the world around them.
Social Studies
In social studies, students gain a strong understanding of history through a progression from ancient civilizations to modern global events. Students begin with early human societies and ancient civilizations, build a strong foundation in U.S. history through the 19th century, and conclude with a study of 20th century world history and global perspectives. Across all grade levels, students engage in historical inquiry, primary source analysis, and critical thinking as they examine how people, ideas, and events have shaped the world over time.
Foreign Language
In Middle School, students are introduced to both Spanish and Latin during fifth grade before selecting one language to continue studying beginning in sixth grade. Through the study of language, grammar, and culture, students build foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in another language.

Specialty Classes and Enrichment

Weekly technology and robotics class helps middle school students build confidence in coding, robotics, digital collaboration, and problem-solving through hands-on learning experiences designed to help students navigate an increasingly digital world.

Art classes in middle school encourage students to explore creativity and develop artistic skills through hands-on experiences with a variety of media, including drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, and sculpture. Through creative exploration and exposure to art history, students build confidence, self-expression, and an appreciation for the role of visual arts in culture and community.

Students have the choice to take either band or chorus for their four years in middle school. Both music programs build students’ musical appreciation and understanding, while providing performance opportunities.

Students in 6th – 8th grade participate in weekly electives with offerings ranging from fishing and Mah-jongg to weight lifting and baking, allowing students to engage in hands-on, interest-based learning. Electives rotate on a trimester basis, giving students the opportunity to experience a wide variety of courses throughout the year.

Physical education classes twice a week help students build confidence, teamwork, and resilience through movement and skill development. Students participate in a variety of activities, including yoga, frisbee golf, wiffle ball, flag football, pickleball, lacrosse, and field hockey.

Weekly health classes led by the middle school guidance counselor support students’ well-being and growth. Throughout the year, students explore topics such as emotional awareness, resilience, empathy, healthy relationships, and making responsible choices

In weekly classes held in our outdoor education center and high and low ropes courses, students hone their foundational wilderness skills and leadership skills such as teamwork and communication, while engaging in challenges that push them to grow outside their comfort zones.

Students in grades 6-8 attend Servant Leadership classes weekly, where they explore issues such as food insecurity, immigration and refugee experiences, and support for individuals with disabilities. Students regularly visit local non-profit organizations and participate in hands-on service opportunities while building empathy, understanding, and a sense of responsibility to others.

Middle school spiritual development classes introduce students to values, theology, and world religions in a reflective, age-appropriate setting. Through discussion and reflection, students build respect for diverse perspectives while beginning to shape their own understanding of faith, identity, and their personal spiritual journey.

All Canterbury students from Cubs through 8th grade enjoy two recesses each day that provide time for active play, rest, and connection with peers. These breaks throughout the day help students return to the classroom focused, energized, and ready to learn.

Middle School learning specialists work with students to provide explicit instruction, targeted skill-building, and study strategies for students who need additional academic support. Classroom teachers also offer daily afternoon tutorials in core subjects. These half hour drop-in sessions are available to all students.
