Working together to help children learn and grow in a complex world

What teachers want parents to know about learning at home

By Lower School Faculty

Take a deep breath and enjoy a few nuggets of reassurance from our lower-school educators:

“You've got this! Remember you have been teaching your child at home since you brought him/her home from the hospital. Think back to a time when they were beginning to roll over, crawl, walk, and talk. It took trial and error, great effort, and lots of practice for them to learn to do each of those things. And look what a great job you did! They do it so amazingly well now!” Elaine Hoover, 1st grade

“Our initial reaction to change is to panic. When faced with uncertainty, even adults don't like it. But, remember, it's only in the broken places like the cracks that the light gets in. Each day is getting better. Find humor and embrace the change. WE got this!” Tracy McIlwain, 2nd grade

“Remember to be flexible and give yourself grace. This is new to all of us. It may take a week or two to adjust to this ‘new normal.’ Try to recognize when you or your child are getting frustrated and take a break before things get stressful. It's okay to stop and come back to it later.” Tracy Artz, PreK

“We can do this! We are all scientists at heart. Your children challenge me each and every day with their 'I wonder' questions. In a world where we typically don't have time to ponder and research those wonderings, we now find ourselves with the gift of time to wonder with our children. Let them ask, explore with them, think with them, experiment with them, and you will see what I have been so fortunate to see everyday. Their faces light up when they discover something new. Science is everywhere, let's wonder together!” Ashley Meyer, Lower School Science
