Distance Learning Updates

Canterbury School is committed to being as prepared as possible to prevent the spread of coronavirus. We will continue to monitor timely resources to inform how we can best uphold our commitment to the health and well-being of our community. We will use this website to provide updates on our decisions and guidance.

Daily Updates

3.27.20 Independent schools across our state are remaining closed until May 15, in coordination with Gov. Cooper’s mandate for the public schools that we hope helps “flatten the curve.” Canterbury also will continue distance learning through May 15, although of course, we hope to return to classes on campus as soon as it is safe for us to do so.

3.24.20 Distance learning continues. Head of School Phil Spears shared a message on Facebook and bad jokes on Instagram.

3.23.20 Distance learning is under way! Middle school students have 30-minute lessons from each of their teachers each day and lower school students are reviewing while they settle into their at-home learning routines. Chaplain Hunter Silides shared our first Chapel "Light" live on Facebook.

3.19.20 Our division directors have emailed parents with assignments for today for 2nd-8th graders. Contact Anne Krishnan if you didn't receive them. Our excellent school counselors also have posted a series of resources on the counseling page in CLAW.

3.18.20 Many thanks to the parents who are arriving to pick up their students' learning materials. Our modified carpool will run until 4 p.m. today. Even if you can't make it in your assigned time slot, please come to pick up your children's belongings so that they can be ready to begin distance learning!

3.17.20 Canterbury will hold a special carpool on Wednesday, March 18, for parents to pick up student belongings. Please see specific instructions and time slots for pickup below. In the meantime, faculty, staff, and administrators are working diligently to prepare for distance learning to start on Thursday.

3.14.20 Canterbury is suspending in-person classes and moving to distance learning for at least the next three weeks, effective Monday, March 16. Details are in Phil Spears' email, linked below, and more information will be released in coming days. Thank you for your support as we all do our part for the health and well-being of our community.

3.13.20 We were disappointed not to celebrate chapel with all of our fathers today, but we must adapt to do our part against the spread of coronavirus. Our 8th graders still came together in support of Mary Rose’s sermon, while students in other grades took time for prayer in their classrooms.

3.12.20 In accordance with guidelines issued by Governor Roy Cooper this evening, we are cancelling all non-essential gatherings of more than 100 people. This includes tomorrow's Fathers' Chapel, all sporting events and off-campus field trips. We are disappointed but thank you for your patience and understanding in these unprecedented times. We do look forward to welcoming our students to campus tomorrow for a great day of teaching and learning starting at our regular time of 8:00 a.m.
